The third generation of Southern Jews began a transition from the Jewish merchant and retail business to a generation of professionals such as accountants, teachers, lawyers, and doctors.

Jews in the 21st Century

Today, Jews comprise approximately 0.5% of the southern population but remain vital and engaged members of the their southern communities. At present, the Jewish population in the United States is approximately 5 million (2% of the national total), which is lower than it was in previous years. For example, in the 1940s the Jews in the United States made up 3.7% of the national population. Due to smaller families and intermarriage, the population of Jews in America is decreasing.
