What Is A Producer?

The theatrical producer is responsible for overseeing all aspects of mounting a theater production. The independent producer begins the process of mounting a production by finding the script then hiring the director followed by organizing the business and financial details of the playwright, producer, and director’s creative vision. The producer is sometimes involved in casting the actors and will usually approve (or not approve) final casting choices. The producer is responsible for securing funds for the production through his or her own company or by taking on investors or general partners in the production. For any given play or musical, the producer will probably secure all rights (often including film/television and a royalty agreement); then work with theatrical agents; find other required staff positions; negotiate with the unions, secure the theater and rehearsal space; obtain liability and workers’ compensation insurance; and post bonds with the unions.
