Musical Theater vs. Straight Plays

A straight play is a term used to describe a form of theatrical production featuring spoken drama and is commonly used to differentiate from the musical theater form. A straight play does not usually include singing; however, some singing may be used for special affect such as characterization.

Musical theater is a form of theater combining instrumental music, singing, spoken dialogue, and dance. The story of a musical (e.g., plot and emotional content) is communicated through the combination of words, music, movement and technical aspects of the production.

Who are The Composer & Lyricist?

Every music concert or musical production requires a composer and, if the concert or musical includes song, also a lyricist. The composer is the person who writes the music (or score) and the lyricist is the person who writes the lyrics (or words) for the songs. Sometimes the composer and lyricist are different people and sometimes one person assumes the two roles.
